The following excerpt is of the Parliamentary Discussion on Gurkhas that took place on 14th July 2008 and has been kindly forwarded by Mr. Alex Crawford, to be shared amongst the Gurkha community. Yes, we aren't being forgotten, yet we cannot afford to be complacent. Mr. Crawford mentions a slight 'softening in government's approach' on the matter. Perhaps at long last, the Gurkha campaign for justice may finally prevail.

A splash of the crimson rays of the sun appeared on the tip of the 8598m Kanchenjunga Range. Then it turned into orange and was gradually bathed in a yellowish tint, becoming extremely bright. You could discern the chirping of the Himalayan birds in the surrounding bushes and trees, amidst the clicking of cameras. I was on Tiger Hill. But my thoughts were elsewhere.

"Does a friend desert a friend in time of need? If you win, we win with you, if you lose, we lose with you". These were the assurances given by Nepal's then prime minister when Great Britain declared war on Germany during the Second World War. Indeed, Nepal's brave sons have kept their word to the hilt to this day. Yet, signifying that the 'friend' whom the Gurkhas bravely fought alongside with has let the pre-1997 Gurkhas down terribly, retired Gurkha Corporal Mr. Purna Bahadur Gurung (physical training instructor whilst in the Army) passed away suddenly on 11 July 2007 aged 55 under enormous stress and with a broken heart, exemplifying the enormous struggle that pre 1997 Gurkhas have had to endure in their ongoing campaign for right to settle in Britain.

In another shining example that Gurkhas are reknowned not just for their bravery but generous hearts too, retired Gurkha soldiers and their families based around Aldershot have raised a total sum of £1300 for their local pre-school through a fund-raising event on Tuesday, 15th July 2008. Co-ordinated by ex-1RGR 21167349 Min Gurung, the event was graced by the deputy mayor Mr. Roger Kimber and councillor Eric Neal of Greater Rushmoor Council and sponsored by various local Nepali business houses. Whilst some firmly established communities have been celebrating years of successful establishment, some new communities too are being launched every year. Amongst the younger communities, the Arther Danda-Kharka Samaaj UK recently held a get-together to celebrate its first year of establishment. Arther Danda-Kharka is a village in Western Nepal, close to the beautiful city of Pokhara, often credited as the birtplace of many social leaders from Nepal's indegeneous population. Coincidentally, the event took place on the same day as the Mardikhola wasi event, i.e. 12th July 2008 (82 photo files)

As the saying goes, make hay while the sun shines. Indeed, whilst summer is still here, much like everyone else, the Gorkha district family too held a get together on the second weekend of July. And how else to celebrate the event but with hot sizzling barbecue washed down with cold drinks, followed by some calorie-reducing dance routines to traditional Nepali folk songs? See photos of the event here (86 photo files)
