Nepalese youth present £2589.73 cheque for the Mayor’s Charities

I had a very pleasant surprise today when, following the cycle ride that they organised for the Mayor of Rushmoor’s Charities last Sunday (18 September), Naya Yuva (New Youth) presented me with a cheque for £2589.73 (slideshow below).

We met outside the Council Offices in Farnborough so that the Naya Yuva team could hand over the cheque, which was made up of entry fees from the cycle riders, sponsorship money
that the riders collected and donations made by local local businesses and organisations:  AM Resturant; Bourkes Entertainment; Curry Express; Events and Ideas Production; Greater Rushmoor Nepalese Community; Gulmi and Naumati Samaj; Kirat Yayokha; Nepalese Jewellery; Sai Centre; Suravi Hair Salon; The Times Café; Word of Mouth; and, Zaffron Resturant.

“Our Naya Yuva youth group encourages, guides, supports and promotes Nepalese youth locally,” said cycle-ride organiser Sheila Limbu. “We set ourselves this challenge because we wanted to do something active to support the Mayor’s Charities this year – Parkside (Aldershot & District Mencap), Nepalese Help, and the Aldershot Town Centre Pastoral Team.

“My colleague, Nishan Ale, presented the proposal to the Mayor only last month, and he encouraged us to go ahead and show what we could do.

“We had to plan the route, prepare the publicity and registration forms, recruit the cycle riders, sponsors and donors, find marshals and volunteers, test out the route and get everyone to the Farnborough Community Centre for the start at 9.00 am on a Sunday morning!” said Ms Limbu.

“With the dedication and the commitment of members, Naya Yuva pulled it off, and we were delighted with how much we raised for the Mayor’s Charities.”

Ms Limbu added: “We are now looking forward to next May when, with the help of Rushmoor Borough Council and the Rushmoor Cycling Forum, we will be organising a much bigger cycle ride for the Mayor’s Charities as part of Rushmoor’s contribution to the run up to The London 2012 Olympic Games.”
