Gurkha – The True Story for a Campaign for Justice

Press release

15 January 2012

Kent’s leading campaigner, Peter Carroll has put pen to paper and written his account of the Gurkha Campaign. The book entitled Gurkha – The True Story for a Campaign for Justice is published by Bitback Publishing on the 9th February.

There have been few campaigns in living memory which have stirred the British public as much as the battle for justice for the Gurkhas.  The campaign against the Labour Government to claim the Gurkhas rightful place, living in the heart of the democracy they fought and many died for.

Peter Carroll led the campaign which brought the Labour Government its first defeat in power, the campaign which embarrassed cabinet members and brought Joanna Lumley her finest hour in British politics. The campaign was also the first time David Cameron and Nick Clegg united to fight Labour.

The book charts the late night strategy meetings, the battles in Downing St, the revelation that Peter and Joanna Lumley had discussed standing against the incumbent Prime Minister as the startling last card power play in the campaign that fought for justice.

The book has a moving and personal introduction from Joanna Lumley, with deep insights to the machinations of the corridors of power, intrigue, injustice and justice.

Gurkha sets out the incredible intense whirlwind of lobbying, campaigning and sheer bloody mindedness that made up the Gurkha Justice Campaign. It seems fitting that the characteristics of the campaign led by Peter Carroll matched those of the brave men and women he was fighting for.

Peter Carroll said, ‘It isn’t possible to overstate our determination to use every possible legitimate means to win for the Gurkhas. By early May we even had an outline plan for our ‘nuclear’ option; that we would be to stand Joanna in the next general election against the Prime Minister in his own seat on the single issue of the right of retired Gurkhas to live in Britain.’

Gurkha tells the whole story in a warm, compassionate and unflinching way of the campaign which touched the hearts of Britain and showed how true campaigning actually makes a difference.
