Best of both event to take place in Aldershot February 4th
When two very diverse cultures collide in a small geographical area, tension and unrest is bound to ensue, right? Wrong. When enough people from both cultures love their community and care about its people, they will do whatever it takes to avoid the descent into segregation and sectarianism. The people of Aldershot and Farnborough, whether native born or new residents from Nepal, are setting a fine example in this respect for other areas to follow. The majority of the people of Rushmoor recognise that each culture can benefit and be enriched by the best that the other has to offer. In celebration of this fact, United Rushmoor has arranged an event called “Best of Both” to be held at The King’s Centre, High Street, Aldershot GU11 1DJ on Saturday 4th February 2012 from midday until 5pm.
Best of Both will be a multi-cultural extravaganza showcasing some of the very best of English and Nepalese traditions. The day will be split into two two-hour shows. Nepali and British acts will perform for approximately ten minutes each. At 2.15pm there will be a break during which the new United Rushmoor logo* will be presented by Gurkhas.com. There will be a raffle, which will be drawn at 4.30pm. During the day visitors to the event will be able to purchase a selection of meals with Nepalese starters and main courses and traditional British desserts and cakes. A British and Nepali market will sell traditional crafts from both cultures. There will be a presentation area where local charities and voluntary organisations will have displays explaining their services. And the children have not been forgotten – there will be a supervised bouncy castle available for them inside The King’s Centre.
Sam Phillips writes:
Over the last few years, Rushmoor’s population has grown rapidly with an increase of Nepali/ex Gurkhas and I started to notice divides building within our community. Having three children, I decided that I did not want my family growing up in an environment of segregation, and so “United Rushmoor” was born.
“United Rushmoor” is committed to making positive steps to build a single community for all the residents of Rushmoor. We believe that the best way forwards is to take the best of all cultures and build a single community where we can coexist in harmony, break down the walls between us and work towards a future for Rushmoor that focuses on everyone standing side by side.
We hope to achieve this by creating events and sports teams that will help build cross community cohesion by working, playing and socialising as one community. We have so much to offer each other and already have a great history of working together in the past that it seems that it would be easy for us to work together for the future.
We all can do something to make a difference. It can be as small as a smile, a friendly nod of the head, joining us at one of our events or becoming a member of one of our teams. But it is clear to us that if we work together we will be able to create “United Rushmoor”.
