The inspiring 'Best of Both' event organised by 'United Rushmoor' (representing Nepalese and local British communities in Rushmoor) took place in Aldershot town centre on 3rd February amidst great atmosphere with one sole objective: to unite residents of Rushmoor, irrespective of colour, creed, race and age. The hall was packed to the brim with a sea of happy, hopeful, positive faces from all ages and backgrounds.
The multicultural extravaganza -with maximum input from young people along with a few welcome contributions from older generation, combined with food, goodies, books and gift stalls alongside stalls representing various service providers based in Rushmoor were an added bonus on an already packed, fun-filled itinerary for the day's programme.
We salute the hard work of all the people behind United Rushmoor (www.unitedrushmoor.com) -including youths from both sides for their commitment, mutual compassion and genuine care for the whole community as these were the qualities that eventually helped bring two sides of the same community together, united as one. Those will perhaps also be the very qualities that will help keep the community united in the days to come. And through their efforts, they have given hope and aspiration to the younger generation -as much as to older generation that things are beginning to change, for the better. It also proved that everybody desires integrated, supportive community rather than a segregated, divided one. They have proved too, that with mutual understanding and respect, great challenges can be overcome and the pathway to promotion of social cohesion can thereafter be that much smoother.
Indeed, the event seemed to prove to everyone what reknowned cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead once famously remarked:
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead.
Well done thus to everyone at United Rushmoor for their dedicated efforts in steering the community from imminent social division towards one of social harmony. Well done too, for pulling off such a positive, successful event in such short space of time and to relevant community members, social groups, volunteers for their equally significant support and moral boost from behind the scenes. Our very best wishes too, to United Rushmoor for the future ahead.
Here are some pictures of the event captured by our photographer Milan Tamu, and video highlights by our videographer bhai Maniram Rai. (At the event, Milan dai also proudly took the honour to present the attractive and unique United Rushmoor logo to Sam Phillips, the Chairperson of United Rushmoor, who then presented the logo to Richard Cooper, volunteer coach for United Rushmoor Youths Football Club, consisting mixed teams of both Nepalese and British young footballers. The logo was jointly refined and commissioned by Gurkhas.com and Nepalisamajuk.com, signifying immense pride in demonstrating solidarity in a good, well-meant cause from even wider sections of the society).

This is a very good program, good intention and well organized. We have to learn to live in harmony alongside one another. This is the first step to getting to know others. Hopefully we can rule out all the assumptions, stereotypes and be friends and supportive of one another. Best wishes ahead.
