It's amazing how great feats can be acheived by working together for a common goal. UK-based Tamus have this past weekend demonstrated just that, by raising over NC Rs. 30 Lakhs in one single evening for construction of a Museum in Beshi Shahar, Lamjung, Nepal to raise profile and help preserve the unique beauty and significance of Tamu Cultural heritage in Nepal.

It maybe right to quote too, that our cultural and ethnic identities are inseparable parts of our own being and hence collective efforts towards preservation of Nepal's unique art and culture in all its forms are laudable in their own right.

Here are some pictures of the event, courtesy of Mr. Milan Tamu

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who was involved in the fund raising for the Historical Tamu Sangrahalaya, which is being built in Lamjung Besisahar. A special thank you goes out to those who attended those who were unable to attend, and those who donated money to help us fund the completion of the museum. An extra special thank you goes out to the main cordinator Ekendra Gurung, the Formal Head Teacher of Budhodaya High School Gilung, Lamjung Nepal. He wrote an amazingly moving Gurung song, Pretana Rodima that we still use regularly today in all events! He has poured all his time and effort into retaining our Tamu society’s culture, heritage and the identity. Furthermore he has tried to educate and enlighten other people to the Gurung culture. Another major role that he has been playing is the Tamu Unity. I feel that this museum will greatly benefit everyone who wishes to learn about the Gurung culture and both tangible and intangible heritage. I also feel that everyone played a very vital part in this Noble cause, like well-known photographer Milan Tamu, Nirmaya Rodhighar, both past and the Present Presidents of the Lamjung Samaj UK, plus committee members and the area reps, Excellent and clear presentation of Capt Deb Bahadur Ghale and Prem Gurung, valuable guests and donors from the NRN UK, Tamudhee UK and the Tamu Phe Lhu Sang UK. Definitely it would not have been possible without the efforts that everyone gave! The statue of late Dr Harka Gurung has been erected, and people are able to gaze upon it and show him their respects as they walk into the museum. Finally I would like to say that the money we collected from this charity event will be put to good use. We have major plans to make this museum the very best it can be, and we plan to pour every last penny into this museum so that everyone who has helped us can benefit from their contribution, and everyone who wants to learn, will be able to do so in a comfortable and supportive environment.
