The Buddhist Community Centre UK (estd. 2007), which started with just 5 members, today welcomed over 1500 devotees -both Nepalese and non-Nepalese at the Bisley Pavilion, all of whom had come from all over the UK to celebrate Buddha Jayanti; the most holy date for Buddhists as they celebrate the Birth, Enlightenment and Maha Parinirvana of Lord Gautam Buddha on this day.

This was one event where gurkhas.com team felt that at last, Nepalese events had successfully transcended caste-based gatherings and where everyone seemed to feel at ease simply observing the significant day together in solemn prayers for peace, compassion and harmony in the world. It was also one such event where both young and old seemed to have joined hands to volunteer their time, energy and efforts in order to try and make the event a memorable and momentous one for everyone who had come to the Bisley Pavilion to mark and celebrate Buddha Jayanti.

Preparations had reportedly started months ago, and volunteers from across UK had already come together at Bisley the day before to ensure everything was set up according to plan. The enormous planning reflected in the beautiful way in which the main pooja hall had been decorated similar to a Buddhist monastery -with venerable Lama Gurus in their high seats- and how glad all devotees seemed to be, to have made it there.

As devotees came in their hundreds, they were helpfully led by the numerous volunteers to the different areas designated for offering lights and incense, to offer fruits and fresh flowers and/or to make personal prayers -many with family members- to Lord Buddha.

The well-organised event included free-flowing hot and cold drinks (all costs borne by volunteers) as well as hot vegetarian Nepalese meal for everyone.

Lunch was followed by short talks by various dignitaries, sermon and hymns, then blessings from Head Guru HE Dupsing Rinpoche and other blessed Gurus.

Donations were also made generously by many to help pool funds for an ambitious yet essential and meaningful project, the BCCUK Buddhist monastery (interviews with the key co-ordinating personnel regarding the significance of this event, challenges so far, how these were overcome and projects in the pipeline -including the public talk by HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA ON 21ST JUNE 2012-to be uploaded very soon).

Here we have pictures of the event; we are thankful to our young person Miss Simant Gurung (regular columnist at Everest Times weekly) and Mr. Jumkaji Gurung ex-QGE for volunteering to take these pictures for sharing purpose with our wider community. If anyone is missing in the pictures, please do appreciate that it is unintentional on part of our volunteer photographers and purely due the inability to capture everyone in the large turnout.

We are also thankful to the beautiful young person who stepped in without hesitation to take the video interviews with BCCUK key co-ordinating members at the last minute (we are extremely sorry that we forgot to ask her name in all the excitement; please do kindly share with us if you recognise her)

Dear Kaji When we spoke on the phone you thought that it would be useful if I let you have my impressions of the Buddha Jayanti celebration which I am very happy to write. Professionally I work -as you know- with Parliaments in countries transition . A good deal of work has to go into getting people to feel a sense of ownership of the service we are establishing in the country . So I recognise the thought that has gone into developing that sense of ownership among all those who have contributed to the centre. I really like the way this has been done, also the degree to which you have got the leadership of the county engaged and enthusiastic. It takes a lot of work and skill. Throughout most of my working life I have worked with organizations which have relied heavily on volunteers and again know just how difficult it is to deliver events and activities relying solely on volunteers. I hope Kaji you and your colleagues take pleasure in your achievement and effectiveness in this area. As you know Fuad Janmohamed had never been to such a puja before so it is worth your knowing his comments as they were from someone who has very little exposure to the traditions of the community and is a Moslem. He picked up on how people are with one another to quite a degree and how he felt it would have been very different if there had been such a group of British people with so much movement in such a close confined space. Then he also spoke about how much you had put into it and the thoughtfulness and the general approach touched him greatly. I do believe that the BCC is unique in the UK in the emphasis that has been put on inclusivity and Both Thubten Samdup and I know that this will touch His Holiness when he speaks to the community. He also said to me that he was really glad to have attended and it helped him in preparing for the event the community is preparing for His Holiness. I very much value my association with the Buddhist Community Centre and have great respect as you know for all those who have made it happen. Yours Riki Fredrick R Hyde-Chambers OBE Executive Chairman

I would like to say a big thank you to The Buddha Jayanti Organising Team and all the executive committee members of BCCUK for organising such a great event. It clearly has epitomised how all human beings from all walks of life come together harmoniously in one place to celebrate the Buddha Jyanti. Once again, congratulation and thank you to Maj (Retd) Khusiman Gurung and his team for hard work and eventually a great success!!! Jai Buddha, Kaji Sherpa Chairman BCCUK

The main Lama Guru, His Eminence Dupsing Rinpoche, Khepo Vagindra Shila, Distinguished guests, Chairpersons/ representatives of various Nepalese Organisations, Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon. On behalf of the members of the Buddhist Community Centre UK, I would like to welcome and thank you all for joining us at this auspicious event “the celebration of 2556th Buddha Jayanti”. Today is a very significant day for over 500 million Buddhists over the world. Buddha Jayanti which is also known as Buddha Purnima, is the most sacred festivals of Buddhist. Buddha Purnima (Buddha’s Birthday) is celebrated in remembrance of Lord Buddha. Lord Buddha is the founder of Buddhism. This day is the anniversary of the birth, enlightenment and pari -nir vana of Lord Buddha. It falls on the full moon of the fourth lunar month (the month of Vaisakh) i.e. April or May. This day commemorates three important events of Buddha's life: His birth in 623 BC. at Kapilvaustu, Lumbini, in NEPAL His enlightment i.e. attainment of supreme wisdom, in 588 BC. His attainment of Nirvana i.e. the complete extinction of his self, at the age of 80. Buddha travelled far and wide teaching hundreds of followers. Even after his death his disciples continued to spread his teachings of the four noble truths and eightfold path. The Four Noble Truths 1. Life means suffering. 2. The origin of suffering is attachment. 3. The cessation of suffering is attainable. 4. The path to the cessation of suffering. Right View Right Intention Right Speech Right Action. Right Livelihood. Right Effort Right Mindfulness Right Concentration Rich and poor alike were attracted by the simplicity of Buddha’s teaching and his emphasis on complete equality of all. We are all human beings and one way or another we are brothers and sisters therefore in our current world it is important to understand and practice the teaching of Buddha to respect others and others faith and live together with peace and harmony within today’s society. The BCCUK has been organising the Buddha Jayanti Celebration since it was established 2007. The BCCUK committee members were formed in 2007. We are in the process of establishing, The Buddhist Community Centre UK. This will be a centre for all Buddhists and will be open to members of the public with an interest in Buddhism. Once created, the centre will deliver teachings by a Lama, within the Mahayana Buddhist tradition and its values. This will be achieved through Buddhist teachings, meditation, community service, retreats and projects that preserve the tradition. It will be an ideal place for practising Buddha dharma under the Mahayana tradition and will have complementary activities such as meditation classes, workshops and room for individual contemplation. The temple will ideally have a community hall adjacent to it where individuals can gather after ritual practices to celebrate the occasion. We are desperately seeking support from all walks of life in order to accomplish our mission; our dream is to establish a distinctive Gomba (Buddhist Monastery) within Europe. Your kind support will make the dream come true. I am delighted to inform you all that we have recently managed to register the Buddhist Community Centre to the charity commissioner and obtained UK charity status. We have also found premises near Aldershot Town Football Club and are currently in the process of buying the premises. This will be the first stepping stone although we are looking for larger premises in the future. I am also extremely delighted to inform you that His Holiness the Dalai Lama has kindly accepted our invitation and will be giving a talk at Aldershot Town Football Stadium, on 21st June. I hope you will enjoy the day and at the end of the day we all will achieve some degree of enlightenment. Once again thank you May the lord Buddha bless us all, Jai Buddha! Kaji Sherpa Chairman of BCCUK
