Britain axes hundreds of Gurkhas in new round of cuts

London: Hundreds of Britain's Nepalese Gurkha fighters are to lose their jobs in a second round of cuts announced on Tuesday, which will see almost 3,000 posts slashed from the army.

The British Embassy in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu said around 320 troops would lose their jobs as the United Kingdom's coalition government takes further steps to slash a record deficit.

The steep cuts to the 3,000-strong Gurkha brigade, which has been part of the British army for nearly two centuries, follow 400 redundancies announced in January.

"As part of further work on British defence restructuring the British Army have today notified those individuals who have been selected for the second round of redundancies," the embassy said in a statement.

"Around 320 Gurkhas have been selected out of the 2,900 jobs to go. The Brigade of Gurkhas has been growing in size since modernisation in 2007, which also allowed them to serve for 22 years instead of 15."

Led by British actress Joanna Lumley, a 2009 campaign won Gurkha veterans who retired before 1997 with at least four years' service the right to settle permanently in Britain.

The Gurkha brigade has been swelling since 2008, when they were granted the right to serve 22 years, compared to 15 years previously.

"This reduction in numbers has therefore been anticipated for some time. All affected personnel will be given 12 months notice and will be given a comprehensive programme of resettlement into civilian life and help with future employment," the embassy added.

About 200,000 Gurkhas fought for Britain in World War I and World War II and more than 45,000 have died in British uniform. They have a reputation for ferocity and bravery and are known for their distinctive curved Kukri knives.

After a review was carried out in 2010, British Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government said it would cut 17,000 jobs from the army, navy and Royal Air Force over four years.

The review has also seen Britain give up its flagship aircraft carrier.

Gurkhe bhai haru don't feel despair. This is not the end of the world. There is plenty of opportunity and jobs out here. Get yourself qualified and learn to live up to "Survival of the fittest" in British society. I was made redundant in 1993 in HK and am still surviving after 12 years stint in 2nd career in GRU. I am 56 years old. Like it or not I am still doing 12 hours shift duty day and night. Jai Gurkhhe

Sadly Gurkha redundancies, have to be faced like all British Armed Forces redundancies, no one in the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force like them. Though in no way is it the fault of individual Gurkha’s, whether Current servicing and/or Gurkha Veteran’s, as it is no way the fault of any British Armed Forces servicemen or women. The fault and blame for these defence cuts in personnel, is purely down to the bad management of the MoD, by both Labour and Conservative Government Defence Ministers. As well as the failures and mistakes, of senior civil servants and senior Armed forces Commanders, over the last 30 to 40 years. Though the Conservative and Lib Dem Coalition Government Minister’s, are and have made equally questionable decisions over British Defence and similarly wasted million’s pounds of tax payers money through their bad management in just two years as well. For example; the failures and mistakes of the purchasing of the new Aircraft Carriers and F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, or focusing on high technology. While forgetting soldiers on the ground, are needed to win and hold territory, nothing really has changed since 1857 and the Gurkha’s relieving the British in Delhi in the Indian mutiny. Equally the British Army, needs Infantry, cavalry and tanks, artillery, engineer’s, signals, logistics, army air corps and all the front line supporting units too. As well as a fully combat effective Navy, Air Force and Marines, plus Special Forces, including Reverse Forces too. What is sadly with all the Gurkha redundancies, the MoD when trying to raise Reverse Forces man power. The MoD and The British Army, has not though of creating Gurkha Territorial Army units, based on Gurkha’s who have been or are being made redundant. Allowing them and encourage current servicing Gurkha’s, who are being made redundant, to join present Reverse Forces units,. Of the Army, or Air Force, or Marines and/or Navy, especially Gurkha Engineer’s, Signaler’s and Logistic specialists, which the Reserve Forces are crying out for Also opening the chance for Gurkha children, young men and women both over the age of 18, the chance of joining a Gurkha Territorial Army units, to follow in their fathers in British Army service. There is no reason why the MoD could not create, a Gurkha Rifles Territorial Company, based in Catterick. Or a Gurkha Engineer’s Territorial Squadron, based in Maidstone As well as Gurkha Signal’s Territorial Squadron, based in Nuneaton. Lastly a Gurkha Logistic Territorial Squadron, based in Aldershot. The point is Gurkha soldiers are needed, also are always wants by others in the British Army, but the question is. Is The Brigade of Gurkha’s and/or Brigade of Gurkha’s Headquarters unit needed, in today’s British Army which is being subjected to such heavy cuts. As the Brigade and the Headquarters unit, neither are a fighting Brigade, the Brigade does not deploy as a fighting force, they are just administration unit basically now!. The important Gurkha units, which need to be saved and go on. Are the Royal Gurkha Rifles, Queen’s Gurkha Engineer’s, Queen’s Gurkha Signal’s and Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic, these fighting units and their Gurkha soldiers are the important ones!. Also the Gurkha Veteran’s Heart’s and Mind’s Event, in Aldershot on Wednesday the 13th of June, was just brilliant. Gyanraj Rai and his fellow Gurkha’s, especially the wives and daughters, who all took part and talked to the people of Aldershot. We just have this to say, sorry we could not be with you on Wednesday, but your Gurkha Mum and God Father plus J/Kali are very proud of you all, you all did very well. Those who tried to stop this taking place were very wrong, Gurkha’s need to carryout more of these “Heart’s and Mind’s” events, getting access not just to local politician’s, but talking to local general public. Gurkha’s cannot allow or let others, whether politician’s or individual’s, who have their own agenda, have their one side says in the news media or in the political arena. Gurkha’s need to come together, to speak out about and tell the truth about Gurkha Welfare issues, here in the UK, as well as in both Nepal and India where Gurkha veteran’s and families are still living!. Also the idea now being present to Her Majesty’s the Queen and especially to the Duke of Edinburgh, in fact to the whole Royal family. By Gurkha Veteran’s and us, over having an annual Gurkha Community and Royal Family Gurkha Curry Cookout and Celebration, events across the UK. Basically each year, starting with the letter “A” for Ashford, then “B” for Brecon, followed by “C” for Catterick, or “D” for Derby, or “E” for Edinburgh, or “F” for Falmouth, or “G” for Guildford, or “H” for Hounslow, and so on throughout the alphabet. With different members of the Royal Family, come to a local Gurkha Communities, with Gurkha’s Communities in over 110 Council Area’s and growing. There is plenty of Gurkha Communities, which could hold and invite a member of the Royal Family, to come to an annual Gurkha Community Royal Gurkha Curry Cookout and Celebration. So a member of the Royal family can visit and take part with the local Gurkha Community, holding a British / Nepalese Celebration and party, plus enjoy a good Gurkha Curry with Gurkha’s and their families plus friends of the Gurkha’s too. Then these Royal Family visits to Gurkha Communities each year, around the UK would help to raise the profile of Gurkha’s in British society, in general and locally. Also stop this false impression, all Gurkha’s and their families just all live just in Aldershot and no where else in the UK, created by the Aldershot MP Gerald Howarth and Defence Minister. With asking His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, if he will first come to Ashford in Kent, as soon as he is well enough to come. This was part of a get well card delivered last week to the London hospital, the Duke of Edinburgh was recovering in after being rushed to hospital, from Gurkha Veteran’s. Lastly Current Gurkha soldier’s and their families, should be aware the Border Agency Officers from Folkestone. Informed us Current servicing Gurkha soldiers, once they have served 4 years. They and their families are entitled to apply for British ILR, while they are still servicing, also after another 5 years while still in the British Army, can claim their full British Citizenship. Not as the Colonel of Brigade of Gurkha’s, has stated in his email with regards Gurkha redundancies. Gurkha’s who are to be made redundant can only apply for British ILR for themselves and families within 6 months of discharge date. The point is Gurkha’s and their families, have been denied their true Welfare Rights and Legal Entitlements, since 1947. Because the Likes of the Brigade of Gurkha’s, Gurkha Welfare Trust, the MoD and the Home Office. Have not always been as truthful about Gurkha Welfare Rights and Legal Entitlements, as they should be. Something we are pointing out to British politician’s, also asking them to investigate now too.
