When the NRN UK honoured one of the first Nepalese Olympians Mr. Bhupendra Silwal here at Aldershot last weekend, little did we know that the Gurkhas too had proudly represented Nepal at Tokyo Olympics 1964, where Nepal team had participated for the very first time.

We are thus thankful to Maj. (Retd.) Tikendra Dal Dewan for sharing this wonderful account and the brilliant vintage pictures with the wider Gurkha Nepalese community. Thank you also to Mr. Prakash Gurung for forwarding them all for wider dissemination.

It is sad indeed if one cannot be proud of one's own unit. The Bde of Gurkhas was one big family albeit with a healthy rivalry between units. The author is only mentioning what is fact and I am sure if there had been Olympians from other units within the Bde then it would have been mentioned without prejudice. Of course all six Olympians were/are Nepali.

It's so sad that the author is addressing to his own unit. Let's not mention your unit, caste and where you are from, we are nepalese after all. What did he trying to achieve by saying ex 6GR???? This will only create division and you know the rest.... say we, us, nepalese...
