The Gurkha Amateur Boxing Club in Maidstone is the first of its kind, founded and managed entirely by an Ex-Gurkha, (Cpl, QGE) Jhapat Sing Bhujel with one sole objective: to transfer his own learnt skills and years of experience into enabling young boxing enthusiasts to reach their full potential. Many of us may be already familiar that Mr. Bhujel, once a feared opponent in the ring who also represented the British Army in some international bouts, is in person the most gentle, kind and positive human being. No wonder then, that although the Gurkha Amateur Boxing Club only started about a year ago, it already has over 40 tutees from all backgrounds, who are all proud to represent and to be associated with the club.

The event on 11th June 2011, which was attended by well over 500 supporters of the club including the local Maidstone Nepalese Community, saw amateur boxers from various boxing clubs from across England fight it out in their different weight/age groups to win at the prestigious match. The atmosphere was ELECTRIFYING, the food equally good and the crowd, super duper enthusiastic! Our hats off to the participants who played up to everyone's expectations and even in triumph or defeat were all dignified.

The tourno also had a joint objective of raising funds for buying better boxing equipments for the club, and the good attendance level was proof enough that there was a lot of support for the cause and that the club had already garnered valuable goodwill  from different sections of the society within the short time of its inception.  Indeed, at no other Gurkha-organised event so far have we witnessed as much balanced participation from both the Nepalese and the British crowd.

Next year, the organisers have promised to make it even bigger and better as more clubs have now shown interest to participate as well! As members of the wider Gurkha Nepalese society, let us all come together to show our solidarity with this humble ex-Gurkha who continues to make us all so proud. Afterall, Kent (and the South East) has no shortage of Gurkhas, ex-Gurkhas, Nepalese living in the vicinity- all it takes is for every individual to want to support our fellow brother in raising the Gurkhas' profile in doing such great positive deeds in society.

Below we have over 190 pictures of the event and a brief catch-up with the man himself after the event. IF YOU LOOK CAREFULLY, YOU MAY NOTICE A VERY HIGH PROFILE BRITISH BOXING FIGURE AMONGST THE CROWD! Next year we plan to bring you brief interviews with the participants and winners too (sincere apologies for the background noise)!

WELL DONE AND BEST WISHES ONCE AGAIN, TO THE GURKHA AMATEUR BOXING CLUB IN MAIDSTONE!!!

(WE ARE GRATEFUL TO DR. GAURAV GURUNG AND MR. DINESH KHADKA (MNC) FOR KINDLY FORWARDING US THESE PICTURES)
