 British envoy opens Gurkha Fair

MANOJ ADHIKARI

POKHARA: British Ambassador to Nepal John Tucknott has stressed the need for unity among political leaders in Nepal to conclude the peace process.

Inaugurating Gurkha Fair 2068 BS organized by Gurkha Community Pokhara on Friday, the envoy said the peace process won´t see a logical end without real unity among Nepali people and political party leaders.

Nepali political leaders also need to learn a lesson of unity from the way this fair has been a success due to unity among Gurkhas, he said.

“I am really impressed to see unity among retired Gurkhas.”

Stating that Nepal and the UK have a very good relation for the past many years, the envoy said this cordial relationship will further deepen in the years to come. He said though voices were raised from various quarters for bringing Gurkha recruitment to a halt, the UK will continue to have Gurkhas in her military.

While lauding the gallantry of Gurkha soldiers, the envoy said that he thinks about the Gurkhas more than his own family.

Addressing the function, the fair´s coordinator Major Laxmi Prasad Gurung said the skills and resources earned by former Gurkhas can be utilized to bring about development in Nepal.

Former Gurkhas had staged a parade during the inaugural session of the three-day fair. 103-year-old former Warrant Officer Dil Bahadur Gurung and Captain Dal Bahadur Gurung were felicitated on the occasion. The fair has a total of 40 stalls.
