The Gurkha Justice Campaign

Joanna Lumley with ex-Gurkha Tul Bahadur PunGurkha Justice Campaigner with banner

Gurkhas are fighting for Justice. They want the same terms and conditions as their UK and Commonwealth counterparts.

Britain has had no greater friends than the Gurkhas. They have served all across the world in the defence of our Country for nearly 200 years. Over 45,000 died in the two World Wars as part of the British Army. They are still fighting in the British Army today.

You may have seen in the media that they are fighting in Parliament and the Courts. Step by step, things are getting better - but there is a long way to go.

On Tuesday 30th September, the High Court ruled their treatment had been unlawful in terms of the right to live in the UK if they retired before 1997.

Following that fantastic High Court decision, the Government has to change the law on how it treats Gurkhas. We demand the full, fundamental change in law that will allow all retired Gurkhas the right to live here.

By signing up below you will be expressing your support for all Gurkhas. You will be signing our petition, and we will be able to contact you in the future as we mount the largest ever campaign to get them the Justice that they deserve.

Join me in the campaign: together, we can finally right this wrong.

Joanna Lumley

Whichever unCivil Servant that allowed this matter to progress to the Courts should be transferred to Afghanistan to serve with the Gurkhas and discover for themselves what rue patriots really are. Gordon Brown, you should hang your head in shame.

Martin Thackray's comments say it all - the Gurkhas are an integral part of the UK and its history - their sacrifices for our freedom should be honoured not dragged through the British Courts to prove - the decision today is the right one and I wholly support this campaign - god bless the Gurkhas and I thank you for the sacrifices you have made to allow me freedom and apologise as a British Citizen that you have had to fight for your rights to live here it should not have happened x

I was posted to Burma just after the 39-45 war had finished.  The troops I joined had nothing but praise for the Gurkhas. Of course we should welcome them here.  British Govts have a habit of forgetting those who have helped them-remember the Shan States & the Karen!

We in England can never repay the debt we owe the Gurkhas, the very least we can give them is the long overdue right to reside in this country.A country they have fought and died for willingly.
That is more than can be said of a lot of people living here!!!

Many many thanks to our British Heroes for thier love, support, and stand for the cause of their johnny Gurkha.I am extremely thrilled how truly they care for them as Gurkhas do to them.I am son and grandson of WWI & WWII Gurkha veteran. They are past though, but were very proud of their military service under the crown, and Great Britain. My father used to tell us lots of stories of war actions and adventures. It was so interesting but at the same time I noticed how much they missed the Union Jack, the crown,Britain and their British colleagues after their retirement from the British Army.Anyway, their hard work paid off with respect and warm welcome by United Kingdom which is indeed a great matter.

As a former Royal Marine I served with the Gurkhas in the Far East wonderful men and so loyal to Briton. G. Brown and his government should all feel ashamed of themselves for allowing it to get even this far. They would do a lot more for this country than the large number of ILLEGEL Immigrants allowed into the UK

We let every other group into our country regardless of their worth or commitment. Each of these guys is worth 100 of them!

Fabulous result. What "stronger tie" can a man have to this country than to give his life for it.   That remark by our government about the Gurkhas "lacking strong ties"  is just about the shabbiest comment it has ever made. I am proud to have served with some of the Gurkhas.    They are a fine proud and loyal people and will do our country far more good than the illegal terrorist sympathisers who already live here.

This government has allowed many undesirables in to the country. Some live on benefits and preach hatred against the country that has given them shelter. Any right thinking person would see the justice of allowing the Gurkahs the right to settle after their years of loyal service and sacrifice. Best wishes to all former and serving Gurkahs.

Being the nephew of a former Goorkha warrior who fought in World War II in the jungles of Burma I strongly feel that this Government is slamming the door in the faces of these brave, proud & disciplined people who made some contribution to make Britain great, but on the other hand is tolerating social misfits and undesirables who preach hatred to continue living here on benefits. AYO GOORKHALI!

Like Joanna's dad my dad fought with the Gurkhas in Burma during WW2 he was a Chindit.   He was badly wounded and a gurkha saved his life by carrying him through the jungle.   He died last year aged 86 and I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the Gurkas. They deserve our thanks and full support both financially and in every other way.

As an ex National Serviceman (Sgt, Royal Engineers 1953-55, Mau Mau Kenya) I am appalled that this Government, not one of whom has ever worn a pair of army boots, can act this way. It is beyond their comprehension that such feelings for Regimental and Army pride can exist throughout the country.
Sack the Government and install the Gurkhas in their place!!!
AYO GURKHALI.

There is no doubt in my mind that they should all be allowed to stay. They were proud to serve our country and we should be proud to have them here. I feel that the Government has no choice in this matter.

About time the government took notice of the British people, the Gurkhas fought hard to help make this country GREAT,and we have to listen to the government, having meeting lunches etc ect costing a fortune,to decide if they can stay here, British people will agree these people should stay and we will honoured to have them.
PS The government should start listening and send home the trash

for 200 years, the gurkha's have shown and given, unexceptionable,HONOUR and LOYALTY to KING/QUEEN and country, I woulod sugest that her majesty's government, should pick up a dictionary, look up those two words, and act on them, they turn a blind eye to every sponger that enters the country, including terrorist's, kowtow to them, yet this country's most loyal ally, is under paid, totally ignored, and given no thought or consideration,is treated with what can only be termed as contempt, show some decency, asuming you understand the meaning, and welcome them to our country, and give them citizenship, they above all, have earneed that right.
Comment posted by david Haighton on Friday, October 10, 2008 12:43 PM
Given the type of trash our Government lets into the U.K. WE should be more than glad to have these brave people settle with us, It's about time this Government stopped messing around and started to look after these friends of Britian instead of looking after terrorists and their supporters, (IE try to bomb and kill uk citizens,go to jail, get out of jail,be housed and live on state benefits)Is it any wonder that the British People are fed up with this Governments policy on the softly softly approach to the people who are trying to kill it's citizens but take a very heavy handed approach to the Gurkhas, who fought and died for this country for years,I would say to the Government (of the day) come out of your ivory towers listen to the people of this country DO THE RIGHT THING give the Gurkhas their rights. I would like to finish by saying when our forces finally come home from the conflicts they are involved in and a victory parade through London takes place that the Gurkhas WILL BE AMONG ALL OF THE SERVICES TAKING PART.
Comment posted by Mike gregson on Saturday, October 11, 2008 7:06 AM
This present Government, not one of whome who has ever experienced the hardships or dangers of military service, is quite happy to take our armed services into more combat and danger than any government for many years. Whilst our armed services are in the buisiness of war fighting, they should expect that they are adequatly cared for for the loss of many of the 'rights' that  many lesser menbers of our society expect and take for granted. Ghurkas have over the years been instremental in securing these people the security that it is so easy to take for granted. While I accept that the day to day cost of living in Nepal may be less than the U.K. if a ghurka is injured or Killed in the service of the crown he is just as disabled or dead as anyone else. If anyone serves with the French foreighn legion he is automatically given French nationality, we should give our brave soldiers similar consideration.

The government should be deeply ashamed, these fine men are being wronged by this government.  They and there families are most welcome to stay in this country by the majority of the English people.  If we could vote for who we would want to live along side us it would be the Gurkhas and their families not the people who Government seems to let in willy nilly who have no intention of putting anything into the country.
Comment posted by Mike Covington on Monday, October 13, 2008 2:10 AM
Having served with the Gurkhas during the Malayan Emergency 1959 to 1962 I was proud to be attached to them and still am. They are the most loyal subjects this country has. This Government, the majority of whom have never seen military service, do not know what loyalty is they would rather let in the spongers who have given NOTHING to this Country than a group of Gurkhas who have given their all, and in some cases the ultimate sacrifice, their lives. The gurkhas should automatically be given British Nationality they have EARNED IT.

As a past member of HM Forces I am ashamed that this campaign should even be needed. The treatment of the Gurkhas is so unfair when we seem to welcome in those who then state publicly how much they hate this country and all it stands for
Comment posted by Kathleen Monck on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 1:13 PM
The government should be ashamed, the loyalty and courage the Gurkhas have shown is beyond duty. We have the very best fighting force in the world helping us for over 200 years. So arguments aside MORALLY we owe them.

I served in Sarawak in the 1960s & it was a great honour & privilege to serve alongside the Gurkhas whilst stationed in Sibu. If the politicians & Civil Servants had an ounce of loyalty, commitmennt & sense of allegiance that the Gurkhas have shown, & still do, towards Britain then this misinformed & obscene situation would never be an issue. It is a sad indictment that our immigration laws are in such a chaotic state, & if anyone was more deserving to have the opportunity to live here it is the respected men of Gurkhas past, present & future. If it's anything to do with the financial aspect I would like to think that this past weeks monetary fiasco puts their plight in a true light.
Comment posted by Mark Towers on Friday, October 17, 2008 2:26 PM
I have been trained by the Gurkhas and served beside them, if all these other immigrants are allowed to stay in this country for doing nothing then these men should be given the highest priority to stay in this country as they actually found and died to serve our Kings and Queens for many years. These current immigrants have done abolutely nothing for this country for their right to stay.

We have so many people in this country illegally to start with who are allowed to stay and yet the ones who fight alongside our own troops, and deserve every respect and honour for doing so, are not allowed to.  I haven't fought in any wars but I think that they deserve the same liberties and freedom that every other British serviceman gets.  Without the Gurkhas surely many thousands more would have lost their lives. We owe them a debt of gratitude that should most definitely be honoured.

The Government should be ashamed that this campaign has ever had to be organised at all, for these brave and loyal men who served this country so well in so many wars. Every single one of them should be welcomed with open arms. They are certainly far more deserving of citizenship than many immigrants that we do admit.

I AM ashamed of our government at the moment. Gurkhas and their families are as much about Britain as the British themselves. I am thoroughly ashamed at how ALL our forces are treated by this government, not looking after them while on active duty, nor when they have served their time. Gurkhas MUST be allowed to live in this country, they have fought and died for English citizens and rights, to deport them is an INSULT to their bravery and courageous service. The biggest disgrace is that the government dont know how many illeagals are here in the U.K but the want to persue and deport men who have fought for this country and have put their lives on the line. ISNT THAT JUST TYPICAL OF TODAYS GOV'T WHERE PEOPLE WHO SERVE OUR COUNTRY MEAN NOTHING.

Just about the time the last dinosaur was being hustled into a museum, I was a member of the Middlesex Regiment. Schoolboy impressions of awe at the history of the Ghurka fighting men followed me into the gates at Mill Hill and, if I close my eyes, I can still see the classic picture of the Ghurka soldier my memory held then.
They died with us, and they died for us. Now, sitting here in Canada,
I pray that Britain remembers, too...and does the right thing.

Right to stay in UK is not the only thing that the 'Gurkhas' who served in the British Army deserves. They should have the same rights as other Britsh Soldiers. This is the golden opportunity to correct the mistakes made in the past.

Gurkha Loyalty!
USED
ABUSED
REFUSED
What a stain on the collective conciences of our Nation. The pathetic ducking and diving of British Politicians of all Parties MUST stop. We reward incompetant Bankers, illegal immigrants and lies told by assorted asylum seekers who have never and mostly, never will, contribute a penny to the Public purse and treat as bonded labour our magnificent British Gurkha soldiers. (That is the pre 1997 group of course). What names , beside that of TROGS, do these BoG/MoD 'EXPERTS' go by? Are they not proud of themselves? Perhaps they do not have English names? Collectively, if their brains were to be turned to gunpowder, there would not be enough to make a damp squib!
Remember Mr Brown, ignore your voters collective will at your peril!

Again, in todays news, I see that these wonderful soldiers who have served this country well for many years, are being slapped in the face. This country has the stain of shame on it. At The Royal Hospital Chelsea there is a motto saying  KEEPING THE NATION'S COVENANT WITH OUR OLD SOLDIERS, Where is the Nation's Covenant for these old soldiers???

This administration are a bunch of liars and traitors who can never be trusted and the announcment we got today in respect of the Gurkhas is no more than I expected.  I just do not understand why they take this position.

They have defended our country now we must defend them. I live in Italy and I always defend my home country but not this time. I'm ashamed to be British!

This government has no sense of shame. They cannot tell principle from dogma. They lecture all of us about obesity, wage restraint and drinking, etc. Worse, they always accuse their critics of racism. Yet, today's shambolic, ignorant and offensive response from this government is the most blatant racism that we have seen in years. I am embarrassed!

I am absolutely raging! This country allows I.I's. (illegal immigrants) who have given absolutely sweet F.A. to this country to stay here as well as allowing o/seas students in on temporary visa for 'educational purposes'.  Currently it is reported (allegedly) that over 60 of these 'students'(mainly of Pakistani origin - again allegedly), are missing as they do not attend the educational training places allocated them!?  Where are they and more worryingly, what are they doing - and/or planning!?  Yet the Gurkhas' who have put their lives on the line for this country - and in many cases lost it, are treated disgracefully by an even more disgraceful oufit!  G. Brown, P. Woolas, J. Smith and all others who have denied these brave heroes a welcome in our land ought to be thoroughly ashamed of themselves, may you all rot in hell!!!!.

We believe the Governments proposals regarding the selection of those Gurkhas and their families who may stay
in the UK is outrageous and ignores the enormous contribution and sacrifices they have all made for the United Kingdom over the last two hundred years.  Everyone
of them without exception should be accepted and welcomed
to this country.  It seems to us amazing that we permit
hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have made absolutely no contribution to the security of this country but deny the Gurkhas. This is an outrage and the officials in the Home Office and the MPs who supported them should
be ashamed of themselves.

Why are the Labour Government making it so difficult for the Gurkhas to come to this Country. For many years they have laid their lives on the line supporting and fighting with our troops, their contribution to this Country has been enormous. It amazes us that we seem to keep so many immigrants who have done nothing for us and yet the Government is snubbing those that have. It is an embarrassing and disgraceful way to treat the worthy Gurkhas.

What else can we expect from a government consisting of politicians from Wales,Ireland and Scotland all of whom have their own agenda and led by an unelected {Scottish elected only} MP  who, in collusion with a load of foreigners from Europe are determined to drag England  into the gutter. The Gurkhas have earned the right over many years to reside in England, more so than the dregs of humanity our MP's have allowed to stay in the name of civil rights and incidentally would not lift a finger in the defence of this country. With friends like them in our midst we don't need any more enemies. What about the civil rights of the Loyal Gurkhas who , I am sure would come to our aid time and again without question if they were needed. Their Gods should bless them all, so let them in immediately if not sooner.

As the Gurkhas' children are  put thru the age barrier (only upto 18),it has eliminated many real post war veterans from settling with their family and children in Britain as they do not wish to be in UK leaving behind their sons and daughters. So it has only benefitted a handful of Gurkhas after all.

Just wanted to add my support for the Gurkha campaign, as I come from a family with strong Services history (RM & Royal Navy). The Gurkhas deserve support and recognition for their loyalty and commitment, and Joanna's campaign is something I fully believe in and would to help if possible. I always remember the Gurkha team who would regularly run the early London Marathon's in formation and the cheers which they received at the time. My athletics club had helped with the drinks stations & these guys always got a massive reception from the crowds and fellow runners alike. It would be great to see this re-established, if anyone serving would be interested. This could be another way to maintain public awareness of the campaign. Ayo Gurkhali..
