Join US army, be a citizen in 6 months for temporary visas holder
New York, February 15, 2009

The US military, faced with a skills shortage, will open its doors to immigrants on temporary visas, enticing them to enlist with an offer of fast-track citizenship, The New York Times reported on Saturday.

Knowledge of a foreign language such as Arabic, Pashto, Chinese, Hindi, Tamil and Nepalese is among the skills the military is looking for. Doctors and nurses are also needed.

The programme will be limited to 1,000 enlistees nationwide in its first year, most for the Army, the Times said. If this succeeds, the programme will be expanded. Immigrants who are permanent residents — those with green cards — have long been eligible to enlist, the Times said. But this is the first time since the Vietnam War that the military will recruit temporary immigrants. Only legal immigrants, including students and refugees who have lived in the United States for at least two years, will be eligible.

Immigrants in the military can apply to become citizens on the first day of active service, and take the oath in as little as six months, the paper said.

“The American Army finds itself in a lot of different countries where cultural awareness is critical,” said Lt Gen. Benjamin C Freakley, the top recruitment officer for the Army. “There will be some very talented folks in this group.”

The programme will be limited to 1,000 enlistees nationwide in its first year, most for the Army, the Times said. If this succeeds, the programme will be expanded. It could eventually provide as many as 14,000 volunteers a year, or about one in six recruits, the paper said.

Most of the students are thinking about it and apply for the army to be citizen or at least get a green card holder. So how tough it's gonna be for the applicants. What sort of things do they have to go through like the steps ?

I would be thankful to the soldiers(officers) to provide an informations about the steps while going for the army like training, physical fitness, health and so on. So that the other applicants can get a chance to know about these things and aware about it.

We all know how tough and risky to go to Afghanistan and Iraq. You will never know that you gonna come back to your FAMILY. I hope they will and make bright future with these chances.

 JAI NEPAL!!!

Sincerely,

I worked 10 years for the US Army after leaving the British Army and can honestly say I have never seen as many Cowboys in all my life. It can be safer on the enemy side when they are around but the money is good

The prospect of a U.S. citizenship sounds very enticing but then you will have to be prepared for what you will need to sacrifice for the cause. I dont think I would like to be shipped to either of their wars. Therefore, I am satisfied as to where I am right now.  Good Luck to you all.

Hi Ram Ram

I wish you well in your efforts to join the US Army.

But I think it is debatable that it is the best army in the world?

First of all they have never won a war on there own in all there history?

They say we won the British fighting for independence, But the British were fighting there own people that were living in America later to become the USA so they had no hart in fighting there own people.

Next this was not a real war as they were only fighting two British regiments one English one Scottish this dose not constitute to a full war as in a real war with country you fight many regiments not just two.

Most recent wars they have been in they have lost.

OK they have the best equipment but who trained their Rangers? The British SAS.

In the first Gulf war they killed with so called friendly fire more English than Sadam ever did?

Bombed even journalist and English armour with big red flags on that could be seen for miles away.

In Afghanistan they started shooting at our lightly armed wagons, but after we put 50mm on top and shot back they stopped.

They will tell you they saved the English in the Second World War. Well let’s look more at this?

They only came in after the German air force was beaten at the battle of Britain we had been fight then for years.

They were here in England for nearly two years with there feet up whilst we were still fighting the Germans. Ask Nepal Gurkhas they will tell you this as they were along side us.

The real reason they came into WW2 was that the Germans had been sinking their ships in their harbours and they sank the liner Lusitania full of Americans, to say nothing of the Japanese bombing Pearl harbour. So who was helping whom.

Well if you can get in the money is good but it would be advised to put your body armour mostly on your back as everything in front of the US Army gets fired at no mater friend or foe.

Re: Join US army, be a citizen in 6 months for temporary visas holder
I think everybody who is jumping on the opportunity needs to grab a grip on the realities of US. In addition, joining the army is a glorious and honorable affair but one also need to be careful with international politics. Especially a political scene that involves the US.

First off, is US Army the best military unit? The answer is no. In fact US military tactic "kill or run" is the direct opposite of what the Gurkha believes in - it's better to die than live like a coward. This is demonstrated through US's vigorous development in long range weaponry. They just cannot bring themselves to a face-to-face battle unlike a Gurkha. How does a Gurkha's honor fit into the US military? This is something Gurkha needs to think about.

Secondly, US has her own fair share of shady dealings. Take for example, there have been repeated raped incidents of female soldiers but most of these were swept under the carpets. Gurkha who are interested in the money will need to consider, will you be protected in the end? Or will history repeats itself and you find yourself fighting a war that is not yours, only to end up used & discarded? Moreover, US has a long history of slavery & discrimination worse than anywhere else in the world. If discrimination is used on even their own citizens, what about you?

On the political front, US is increasingly condemned for not pulling back the American troops. I believe Gurkha are being used in some ways to replace her own troops in battles. You are the one out there fighting with your blood and they satisfy the upset citizens of her own. Will you be honored? There's no guarantee. Will you be sent back to Nepal? There's no guarantee.

Be smart, even the American troops do not believe in the country's policies anymore.

As soldiers, many are trained not to think and not to question the orders. However, when the time comes whether the people at the top of Governments will remember you and think of your family is forever a question mark.

Re: Join US army, be a citizen in 6 months for temporary visas holder

I always remember Mrs Thatcher saying the British army should be integrated like the US Army?

Well I remember the barracks blocks on a camp three blocks were full of white US solders but one block they called skid row was full of Black US Soldiers.

Most of the black soldiers were speck 4 these are the chevrons on their shirts telling their grades.

We asked them what they were a speck 4 in (or specialist 4 in) the answer came back spec 4 latrine cleaners. These were the Black soldiers.
